N.J. businessmen, economists weigh in on rescue plan

New Jersey businessmen and economists react to the $700 billion bailout of the financial industry, which heads to the U.S. House of Representatives today after passage by the Senate Wednesday night: "I don't think we have a choice. It's certainly necessary, but whether it's efficient is going to be the key question...I think it will help. Whether it will fully solve the problem, only time will tell. A lot of New Jerseyans get caught in the Alternative Minimum Tax because it's a high-income state. The AMT was done simply to provide tax relief to the middle class. If people then use the savings in consumption they will stimulate the economy."

The New Jersey Association of Realtors is diving deeper into cyberspace, purchasing virtual real estate in the online world of Second Life, building profiles on networking sites LinkedIn and Facebook, and rolling out audio podcasts for members.
The association announced that it has opened a virtual office in Second Life at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Lamprey/182/37/21. Second Life is a three-dimensional, interactive online world. Other real estate entities, including Coldwell Banker and the California Association of Realtors, are also among the "inhabitants" of Second Life.

The New Jersey Association of REALTORS® Educational Foundation (NJAREF) today awarded 37 students with a total of $55,750 in scholarships to use towards furthering their education.
Scholarships this year ranged from $1,000 to $2,500 and were presented to recipients at a luncheon ceremony at The Westwood in Garwood, NJ. This year's event marks the 25th anniversary of the Foundation's scholarship awards presentation ceremony.

Hanley and Southwick also provided input on their respective local housing markets in Middlesex and Mercer Counties.
